    INTRODUCTION

Relocating can be stressful, especially if the move is a sudden one. While there are many reasons to relocate, people who have lived in the same place for many years or who have friends and family close by may have an emotional attachment to the area and will be reluctant to leave.

When faced with the possibility of relocation, you have to ask yourself the following questions and weigh all the options. If you have a family, they should be involved in the decision making process because it is their lives that will be interrupted as well.

Common questions and concerns for those who are relocating include the following:

Is the job really worth relocating for in terms of salary, title, and advancement?

Will my spouse be able to find employment easily?

What is the cost of living and will my salary cover these costs?

Are there quality schools in the area for my children?

How stable is the company I currently work for?

Is switching jobs a good idea at this point in my life?

What types of debt do I owe?

    How much will relocation cost?

Is there a relocation package included?

After asking yourself these questions and talking with your spouse and family, you should also ask what you will be giving up in terms of friends, family, familiar surroundings, and if you and your family are strong enough to face the unknown. Once you have made the decision to relocate, you cannot change your mind.

Another issue you will have to consider is the emotional stress involved in leaving a comfortable place for a new one.

Dealing with these feelings is not always easy. While some people take comfort in their memories, others focus on what lies ahead. Throwing a large party before leaving or inviting people to your new location may be what you need in order to accept these changes in your lifestyle. Other ways to cope with relocation include:

Spending additional time with friends and family before you move

Taking pictures of the area and creating a photo album

Relocating as quickly as possible so you can start a new phase in your life

Carefully selecting a new area to live in that can help you make the adjustment

Joining social networking groups online so friends and family can be contacted easily

After moving to the new location, you will begin to adjust to your new surroundings and you may even find that there are advantages of moving to a new city or state. You may be closer to stores, entertainment, or you may be further from larger cities so you can enjoy the peace and quiet that country life can bring.

If you have children, the relocation process may be more difficult depending on the ages of your children and how attached they are to their home. Being patient, highlighting the positives, and keeping the connection open with family and friends all contribute to a child's adjustment to living in a strange place.

Throughout this book, you will learn how to survive the relocation process. You will find valuable tips on finding a new home, packing your belongings, and even preparing for international relocation.

You will also learn how to appreciate the benefits of relocation which may include:

    Change of scenery

    Better paying jobs

Lower housing costs in many cases

The ability to find new hobbies and make new friends

Develop a new perspective on life

Learn about new places and countries if planning international relocation

These are just some of the many positive aspects you will experience when you decide to relocate.
